Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 1: 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 240 is even.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 240 × k = 240 × k + 0 × k.
  • Each answer is 240 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 240.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 240 times table is double the answer in the 120 times table: 120 × 6 = 720, so 240 × 6 = 1,440. To multiply 240 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 240 away: 2,400 − 240 = 2,160. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 240: 2,400 + 240 = 2,640. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 240 → 480 → 960.

Every multiple of 240 is at least 240, so there are none below 100 and 4 below 1,000. A number is in the 240 times table exactly when it divides by 240 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 240 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 240 × 10 = 2,400, and 240 × 100 = 24,000. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 2,400 is 1,200.

Using the 240 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 240 × 7 = 1,680, you know 1,680 ÷ 240 = 7 and 1,680 ÷ 7 = 240. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 240 pencils. How many pencils are in 9 boxes?
    Answer9 × 240 = 2,160 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $240 each. How much do 9 tickets cost?
    Answer9 × $240 = $2,160.
  3. 960 chairs are set out in rows of 240. How many rows are there?
    Answer960 ÷ 240 = 4 rows.
  4. A plant grows 240 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 10 weeks?
    Answer10 × 240 = 2,400 millimetres.

Questions

What is 240 × 12?

2,880.

What is half of 240 × 8?

240 × 8 = 1,920, and half of that is 960, which is 240 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 240 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 240 contain nothing.

What is 240 × 7 and 240 × 8?

240 × 7 = 1,680 and 240 × 8 = 1,920. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 3,600 in the 240 times table?

Yes: 3,600 ÷ 240 = 15 with no remainder. 3,601 is not, because dividing it by 240 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 240 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
