Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 3, 6, 9, 2, 5, 8, 1, 4, 7, 0.
  • The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 243 × k = 240 × k + 3 × k.
  • Each answer is 243 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 243.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 243 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 243 away: 2,430 − 243 = 2,187. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 243: 2,430 + 243 = 2,673. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 243 → 486 → 972.

Every multiple of 243 is at least 243, so there are none below 100 and 4 below 1,000. A number is in the 243 times table exactly when it divides by 243 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 243 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 243 × 1 = 243 is odd, 243 × 2 = 486 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 243 × 10 = 2,430, and 243 × 100 = 24,300. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 2,430 is 1,215.

Using the 243 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 243 × 7 = 1,701, you know 1,701 ÷ 243 = 7 and 1,701 ÷ 7 = 243. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 243 pencils. How many pencils are in 9 boxes?
    Answer9 × 243 = 2,187 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $243 each. How much do 8 tickets cost?
    Answer8 × $243 = $1,944.
  3. 2,187 chairs are set out in rows of 243. How many rows are there?
    Answer2,187 ÷ 243 = 9 rows.
  4. A plant grows 243 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 9 weeks?
    Answer9 × 243 = 2,187 millimetres.

Questions

What is 243 × 12?

2,916.

What is half of 243 × 8?

243 × 8 = 1,944, and half of that is 972, which is 243 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 243 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 243 contain nothing.

What is 243 × 7 and 243 × 8?

243 × 7 = 1,701 and 243 × 8 = 1,944. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 3,645 in the 243 times table?

Yes: 3,645 ÷ 243 = 15 with no remainder. 3,646 is not, because dividing it by 243 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 243 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
