Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
- Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
- Split it into tens and ones: 255 × k = 250 × k + 5 × k.
- Each answer is 255 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 255.
Building it from tables you already know
To multiply 255 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 255 away: 2,550 − 255 = 2,295. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 255: 2,550 + 255 = 2,805. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 255 → 510 → 1,020.
Every multiple of 255 is at least 255, so there are none below 100 and 3 below 1,000. A number is in the 255 times table exactly when it divides by 255 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 255 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 255 × 1 = 255 is odd, 255 × 2 = 510 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 255 × 10 = 2,550, and 255 × 100 = 25,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 2,550 is 1,275.
Using the 255 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 255 × 7 = 1,785, you know 1,785 ÷ 255 = 7 and 1,785 ÷ 7 = 255. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 255 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
Answer
3 × 255 = 765 pencils. - Tickets cost $255 each. How much do 12 tickets cost?
Answer
12 × $255 = $3,060. - 1,785 chairs are set out in rows of 255. How many rows are there?
Answer
1,785 ÷ 255 = 7 rows. - A plant grows 255 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 10 weeks?
Answer
10 × 255 = 2,550 millimetres.
Questions
What is 255 × 12?
3,060.
What is half of 255 × 8?
255 × 8 = 2,040, and half of that is 1,020, which is 255 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 255 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 255 contain nothing.
What is 255 × 7 and 255 × 8?
255 × 7 = 1,785 and 255 × 8 = 2,040. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 3,825 in the 255 times table?
Yes: 3,825 ÷ 255 = 15 with no remainder. 3,826 is not, because dividing it by 255 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 255 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
