Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 1: 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 420 is even.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 420 × k = 420 × k + 0 × k.
  • Each answer is 420 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 420.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 420 times table is double the answer in the 210 times table: 210 × 6 = 1,260, so 420 × 6 = 2,520. To multiply 420 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 420 away: 4,200 − 420 = 3,780. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 420: 4,200 + 420 = 4,620. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 420 → 840 → 1,680.

Every multiple of 420 is at least 420, so there are none below 100 and 2 below 1,000. A number is in the 420 times table exactly when it divides by 420 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 420 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 420 × 10 = 4,200, and 420 × 100 = 42,000. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 4,200 is 2,100.

Using the 420 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 420 × 7 = 2,940, you know 2,940 ÷ 420 = 7 and 2,940 ÷ 7 = 420. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 420 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
    Answer4 × 420 = 1,680 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $420 each. How much do 4 tickets cost?
    Answer4 × $420 = $1,680.
  3. 2,520 chairs are set out in rows of 420. How many rows are there?
    Answer2,520 ÷ 420 = 6 rows.
  4. A plant grows 420 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 7 weeks?
    Answer7 × 420 = 2,940 millimetres.

Questions

What is 420 × 12?

5,040.

What is half of 420 × 8?

420 × 8 = 3,360, and half of that is 1,680, which is 420 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 420 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 420 contain nothing.

What is 420 × 7 and 420 × 8?

420 × 7 = 2,940 and 420 × 8 = 3,360. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 6,300 in the 420 times table?

Yes: 6,300 ÷ 420 = 15 with no remainder. 6,301 is not, because dividing it by 420 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 420 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
