Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0.
- Split it into tens and ones: 427 × k = 420 × k + 7 × k.
- Each answer is 427 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 427.
Building it from tables you already know
To multiply 427 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 427 away: 4,270 − 427 = 3,843. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 427: 4,270 + 427 = 4,697. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 427 → 854 → 1,708.
Every multiple of 427 is at least 427, so there are none below 100 and 2 below 1,000. A number is in the 427 times table exactly when it divides by 427 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 427 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 427 × 1 = 427 is odd, 427 × 2 = 854 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 427 × 10 = 4,270, and 427 × 100 = 42,700. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 4,270 is 2,135.
Using the 427 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 427 × 7 = 2,989, you know 2,989 ÷ 427 = 7 and 2,989 ÷ 7 = 427. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 427 pencils. How many pencils are in 6 boxes?
Answer
6 × 427 = 2,562 pencils. - Tickets cost $427 each. How much do 11 tickets cost?
Answer
11 × $427 = $4,697. - 2,989 chairs are set out in rows of 427. How many rows are there?
Answer
2,989 ÷ 427 = 7 rows. - A plant grows 427 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 6 weeks?
Answer
6 × 427 = 2,562 millimetres.
Questions
What is 427 × 12?
5,124.
What is half of 427 × 8?
427 × 8 = 3,416, and half of that is 1,708, which is 427 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 427 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 427 contain nothing.
What is 427 × 7 and 427 × 8?
427 × 7 = 2,989 and 427 × 8 = 3,416. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 6,405 in the 427 times table?
Yes: 6,405 ÷ 427 = 15 with no remainder. 6,406 is not, because dividing it by 427 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 427 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
