Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 505 × k = 500 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 505 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 505.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 505 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 505 away: 5,050 − 505 = 4,545. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 505: 5,050 + 505 = 5,555. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 505 → 1,010 → 2,020.

Every multiple of 505 is at least 505, so there are none below 100 and 1 below 1,000. A number is in the 505 times table exactly when it divides by 505 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 505 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 505 × 1 = 505 is odd, 505 × 2 = 1,010 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 505 × 10 = 5,050, and 505 × 100 = 50,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 5,050 is 2,525.

Using the 505 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 505 × 7 = 3,535, you know 3,535 ÷ 505 = 7 and 3,535 ÷ 7 = 505. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 505 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
    Answer4 × 505 = 2,020 pencils.

Questions

What is 505 × 12?

6,060.

What is half of 505 × 8?

505 × 8 = 4,040, and half of that is 2,020, which is 505 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 505 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 505 contain nothing.

What is 505 × 7 and 505 × 8?

505 × 7 = 3,535 and 505 × 8 = 4,040. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 7,575 in the 505 times table?

Yes: 7,575 ÷ 505 = 15 with no remainder. 7,576 is not, because dividing it by 505 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 505 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
