Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 525 × k = 520 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 525 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 525.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 525 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 525 away: 5,250 − 525 = 4,725. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 525: 5,250 + 525 = 5,775. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 525 → 1,050 → 2,100.

Every multiple of 525 is at least 525, so there are none below 100 and 1 below 1,000. A number is in the 525 times table exactly when it divides by 525 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 525 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 525 × 1 = 525 is odd, 525 × 2 = 1,050 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 525 × 10 = 5,250, and 525 × 100 = 52,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 5,250 is 2,625.

Using the 525 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 525 × 7 = 3,675, you know 3,675 ÷ 525 = 7 and 3,675 ÷ 7 = 525. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 525 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
    Answer3 × 525 = 1,575 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $525 each. How much do 12 tickets cost?
    Answer12 × $525 = $6,300.
  3. 4,200 chairs are set out in rows of 525. How many rows are there?
    Answer4,200 ÷ 525 = 8 rows.
  4. A plant grows 525 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 7 weeks?
    Answer7 × 525 = 3,675 millimetres.

Questions

What is 525 × 12?

6,300.

What is half of 525 × 8?

525 × 8 = 4,200, and half of that is 2,100, which is 525 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 525 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 525 contain nothing.

What is 525 × 7 and 525 × 8?

525 × 7 = 3,675 and 525 × 8 = 4,200. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 7,875 in the 525 times table?

Yes: 7,875 ÷ 525 = 15 with no remainder. 7,876 is not, because dividing it by 525 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 525 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
