Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 1: 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 630 is even.
  • The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 630 × k = 630 × k + 0 × k.
  • Each answer is 630 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 630.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 630 times table is double the answer in the 315 times table: 315 × 6 = 1,890, so 630 × 6 = 3,780. To multiply 630 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 630 away: 6,300 − 630 = 5,670. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 630: 6,300 + 630 = 6,930. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 630 → 1,260 → 2,520.

Every multiple of 630 is at least 630, so there are none below 100 and 1 below 1,000. A number is in the 630 times table exactly when it divides by 630 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 630 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 630 × 10 = 6,300, and 630 × 100 = 63,000. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 6,300 is 3,150.

Using the 630 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 630 × 7 = 4,410, you know 4,410 ÷ 630 = 7 and 4,410 ÷ 7 = 630. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 630 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
    Answer3 × 630 = 1,890 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $630 each. How much do 9 tickets cost?
    Answer9 × $630 = $5,670.
  3. 1,260 chairs are set out in rows of 630. How many rows are there?
    Answer1,260 ÷ 630 = 2 rows.
  4. A plant grows 630 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 8 weeks?
    Answer8 × 630 = 5,040 millimetres.

Questions

What is 630 × 12?

7,560.

What is half of 630 × 8?

630 × 8 = 5,040, and half of that is 2,520, which is 630 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 630 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 630 contain nothing.

What is 630 × 7 and 630 × 8?

630 × 7 = 4,410 and 630 × 8 = 5,040. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 9,450 in the 630 times table?

Yes: 9,450 ÷ 630 = 15 with no remainder. 9,451 is not, because dividing it by 630 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 630 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
