Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0.
  • The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 801 × k = 800 × k + 1 × k.
  • Each answer is 801 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 801.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 801 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 801 away: 8,010 − 801 = 7,209. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 801: 8,010 + 801 = 8,811. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 801 → 1,602 → 3,204.

Every multiple of 801 is at least 801, so there are none below 100 and 1 below 1,000. A number is in the 801 times table exactly when it divides by 801 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 801 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 801 × 1 = 801 is odd, 801 × 2 = 1,602 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 801 × 10 = 8,010, and 801 × 100 = 80,100. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 8,010 is 4,005.

Using the 801 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 801 × 7 = 5,607, you know 5,607 ÷ 801 = 7 and 5,607 ÷ 7 = 801. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 801 pencils. How many pencils are in 5 boxes?
    Answer5 × 801 = 4,005 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $801 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
    Answer6 × $801 = $4,806.
  3. 4,005 chairs are set out in rows of 801. How many rows are there?
    Answer4,005 ÷ 801 = 5 rows.
  4. A plant grows 801 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 7 weeks?
    Answer7 × 801 = 5,607 millimetres.

Questions

What is 801 × 12?

9,612.

What is half of 801 × 8?

801 × 8 = 6,408, and half of that is 3,204, which is 801 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 801 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 801 contain nothing.

What is 801 × 7 and 801 × 8?

801 × 7 = 5,607 and 801 × 8 = 6,408. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 12,015 in the 801 times table?

Yes: 12,015 ÷ 801 = 15 with no remainder. 12,016 is not, because dividing it by 801 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 801 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
