Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0.
- The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
- Split it into tens and ones: 81 × k = 80 × k + 1 × k.
- Each answer is 81 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 81.
Building it from tables you already know
To multiply 81 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 81 away: 810 − 81 = 729. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 81: 810 + 81 = 891. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 81 → 162 → 324.
There are 1 multiples of 81 below 100, and 12 below 1,000. A number is in the 81 times table exactly when it divides by 81 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 81 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 81 × 1 = 81 is odd, 81 × 2 = 162 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 81 × 10 = 810, and 81 × 100 = 8,100. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 810 is 405.
Using the 81 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 81 × 7 = 567, you know 567 ÷ 81 = 7 and 567 ÷ 7 = 81. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 81 pencils. How many pencils are in 7 boxes?
Answer
7 × 81 = 567 pencils. - Tickets cost $81 each. How much do 8 tickets cost?
Answer
8 × $81 = $648. - 243 chairs are set out in rows of 81. How many rows are there?
Answer
243 ÷ 81 = 3 rows. - A plant grows 81 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 9 weeks?
Answer
9 × 81 = 729 millimetres.
Questions
What is 81 × 12?
972.
What is half of 81 × 8?
81 × 8 = 648, and half of that is 324, which is 81 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 81 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 81 contain nothing.
What is 81 × 7 and 81 × 8?
81 × 7 = 567 and 81 × 8 = 648. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 1,215 in the 81 times table?
Yes: 1,215 ÷ 81 = 15 with no remainder. 1,216 is not, because dividing it by 81 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 81 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
