Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 1: 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 990 is even.
  • The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 990 × k = 990 × k + 0 × k.
  • Each answer is 990 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 990.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 990 times table is double the answer in the 495 times table: 495 × 6 = 2,970, so 990 × 6 = 5,940. To multiply 990 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 990 away: 9,900 − 990 = 8,910. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 990: 9,900 + 990 = 10,890. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 990 → 1,980 → 3,960.

Every multiple of 990 is at least 990, so there are none below 100 and 1 below 1,000. A number is in the 990 times table exactly when it divides by 990 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 990 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 990 × 10 = 9,900, and 990 × 100 = 99,000. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 9,900 is 4,950.

Using the 990 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 990 × 7 = 6,930, you know 6,930 ÷ 990 = 7 and 6,930 ÷ 7 = 990. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 990 pencils. How many pencils are in 8 boxes?
    Answer8 × 990 = 7,920 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $990 each. How much do 10 tickets cost?
    Answer10 × $990 = $9,900.
  3. 7,920 chairs are set out in rows of 990. How many rows are there?
    Answer7,920 ÷ 990 = 8 rows.
  4. A plant grows 990 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 10 weeks?
    Answer10 × 990 = 9,900 millimetres.

Questions

What is 990 × 12?

11,880.

What is half of 990 × 8?

990 × 8 = 7,920, and half of that is 3,960, which is 990 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 990 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 990 contain nothing.

What is 990 × 7 and 990 × 8?

990 × 7 = 6,930 and 990 × 8 = 7,920. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 14,850 in the 990 times table?

Yes: 14,850 ÷ 990 = 15 with no remainder. 14,851 is not, because dividing it by 990 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 990 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
