How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 14 ÷ 100 = 0.14
- Multiply: 0.14 × 60 = 8.4
- Check: Work backwards: 8.4 ÷ 60 × 100 = 14%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 14/100 = part/60, so part = 14 × 60 ÷ 100 = 8.4. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =14%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
8.4 is the 14% share of 60. The remaining 86% is 51.6, and the two parts add back up to 60.
Discounts: 14% off an item priced $60 saves $8.4, so you pay $51.6.
Adding and taking away 14%
Increasing 60 by 14% gives 68.4 and decreasing it by 14% gives 51.6. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 14% and then lowering the result by 14% ends at 58.824, because the second 14% is taken of a bigger number.
