How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 24 ÷ 100 = 0.24
  2. Multiply: 0.24 × 5 = 1.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.2 ÷ 5 × 100 = 24%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 24/100 = part/5, so part = 24 × 5 ÷ 100 = 1.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =24%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.2 is the 24% share of 5. The remaining 76% is 3.8, and the two parts add back up to 5.

Discounts: 24% off an item priced $5 saves $1.2, so you pay $3.8.

Adding and taking away 24%

Increasing 5 by 24% gives 6.2 and decreasing it by 24% gives 3.8. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 24% and then lowering the result by 24% ends at 4.712, because the second 24% is taken of a bigger number.
