How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 29 ÷ 100 = 0.29
  2. Multiply: 0.29 × 60 = 17.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 17.4 ÷ 60 × 100 = 29%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 29/100 = part/60, so part = 29 × 60 ÷ 100 = 17.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =29%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

17.4 is the 29% share of 60. The remaining 71% is 42.6, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 29% off an item priced $60 saves $17.4, so you pay $42.6.

Adding and taking away 29%

Increasing 60 by 29% gives 77.4 and decreasing it by 29% gives 42.6. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 29% and then lowering the result by 29% ends at 54.954, because the second 29% is taken of a bigger number.
