How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 38 ÷ 100 = 0.38
  2. Multiply: 0.38 × 65 = 24.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 24.7 ÷ 65 × 100 = 38%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 38/100 = part/65, so part = 38 × 65 ÷ 100 = 24.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =38%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

24.7 is the 38% share of 65. The remaining 62% is 40.3, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 38% off an item priced $65 saves $24.7, so you pay $40.3.

Adding and taking away 38%

Increasing 65 by 38% gives 89.7 and decreasing it by 38% gives 40.3. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 38% and then lowering the result by 38% ends at 55.614, because the second 38% is taken of a bigger number.
