How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
  2. Multiply: 0.04 × 60 = 2.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.4 ÷ 60 × 100 = 4%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/60, so part = 4 × 60 ÷ 100 = 2.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =4%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.4 is the 4% share of 60. The remaining 96% is 57.6, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 4% off an item priced $60 saves $2.4, so you pay $57.6.

Adding and taking away 4%

Increasing 60 by 4% gives 62.4 and decreasing it by 4% gives 57.6. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 59.904, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.
