How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
  2. Multiply: 0.51 × 60 = 30.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 30.6 ÷ 60 × 100 = 51%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/60, so part = 51 × 60 ÷ 100 = 30.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =51%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

30.6 is the 51% share of 60. The remaining 49% is 29.4, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 51% off an item priced $60 saves $30.6, so you pay $29.4.

Adding and taking away 51%

Increasing 60 by 51% gives 90.6 and decreasing it by 51% gives 29.4. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 44.394, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.
