How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 54 ÷ 100 = 0.54
  2. Multiply: 0.54 × 60 = 32.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 32.4 ÷ 60 × 100 = 54%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 54/100 = part/60, so part = 54 × 60 ÷ 100 = 32.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =54%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

32.4 is the 54% share of 60. The remaining 46% is 27.6, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 54% off an item priced $60 saves $32.4, so you pay $27.6.

Adding and taking away 54%

Increasing 60 by 54% gives 92.4 and decreasing it by 54% gives 27.6. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 54% and then lowering the result by 54% ends at 42.504, because the second 54% is taken of a bigger number.
