How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 59 ÷ 100 = 0.59
  2. Multiply: 0.59 × 60 = 35.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 35.4 ÷ 60 × 100 = 59%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 59/100 = part/60, so part = 59 × 60 ÷ 100 = 35.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =59%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

35.4 is the 59% share of 60. The remaining 41% is 24.6, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 59% off an item priced $60 saves $35.4, so you pay $24.6.

Adding and taking away 59%

Increasing 60 by 59% gives 95.4 and decreasing it by 59% gives 24.6. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 59% and then lowering the result by 59% ends at 39.114, because the second 59% is taken of a bigger number.
