How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 62 ÷ 100 = 0.62
  2. Multiply: 0.62 × 60 = 37.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 37.2 ÷ 60 × 100 = 62%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 62/100 = part/60, so part = 62 × 60 ÷ 100 = 37.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =62%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

37.2 is the 62% share of 60. The remaining 38% is 22.8, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 62% off an item priced $60 saves $37.2, so you pay $22.8.

Adding and taking away 62%

Increasing 60 by 62% gives 97.2 and decreasing it by 62% gives 22.8. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 62% and then lowering the result by 62% ends at 36.936, because the second 62% is taken of a bigger number.
