How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 82 ÷ 100 = 0.82
- Multiply: 0.82 × 10 = 8.2
- Check: Work backwards: 8.2 ÷ 10 × 100 = 82%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 82/100 = part/10, so part = 82 × 10 ÷ 100 = 8.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =82%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
8.2 is the 82% share of 10. The remaining 18% is 1.8, and the two parts add back up to 10.
Discounts: 82% off an item priced $10 saves $8.2, so you pay $1.8.
Adding and taking away 82%
Increasing 10 by 82% gives 18.2 and decreasing it by 82% gives 1.8. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 82% and then lowering the result by 82% ends at 3.276, because the second 82% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 10% of 82. 82% of 10 and 10% of 82 are always equal (both are 82 × 10 ÷ 100 = 8.2), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
