How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 99 ÷ 100 = 0.99
  2. Multiply: 0.99 × 60 = 59.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 59.4 ÷ 60 × 100 = 99%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 99/100 = part/60, so part = 99 × 60 ÷ 100 = 59.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =99%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

59.4 is the 99% share of 60. The remaining 1% is 0.6, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 99% off an item priced $60 saves $59.4, so you pay $0.6.

Adding and taking away 99%

Increasing 60 by 99% gives 119.4 and decreasing it by 99% gives 0.6. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 99% and then lowering the result by 99% ends at 1.194, because the second 99% is taken of a bigger number.
