Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 2, 4, 6, 8, 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 12 is even.
  • Split it: 12 × k = 10 × k + 2 × k. For example 12 × 7 = 70 + 14 = 84.
  • Each answer is 12 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 12.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 12 times table is double the answer in the 6 times table: 6 × 6 = 36, so 12 × 6 = 72. To multiply 12 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 12 away: 120 − 12 = 108. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 12: 120 + 12 = 132. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 12 → 24 → 48.

There are 8 multiples of 12 below 100, and 83 below 1,000. A number is in the 12 times table exactly when it divides by 12 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 12 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 12 × 10 = 120, and 12 × 100 = 1,200. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 120 is 60.

Using the 12 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 12 × 7 = 84, you know 84 ÷ 12 = 7 and 84 ÷ 7 = 12. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 12 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
    Answer3 × 12 = 36 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $12 each. How much do 9 tickets cost?
    Answer9 × $12 = $108.
  3. 36 chairs are set out in rows of 12. How many rows are there?
    Answer36 ÷ 12 = 3 rows.
  4. A plant grows 12 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 12 weeks?
    Answer12 × 12 = 144 millimetres.

About this page

The table, the patterns and the practice questions are all calculated for 12 when the page is opened, so every fact on it is exact. Use the options above the worksheet to change the number of questions or the largest multiplier.

Questions

What is 12 × 12?

144.

What is half of 12 × 8?

12 × 8 = 96, and half of that is 48, which is 12 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 12 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 12 contain nothing.

What is 12 × 7 and 12 × 8?

12 × 7 = 84 and 12 × 8 = 96. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 180 in the 12 times table?

Yes: 180 ÷ 12 = 15 with no remainder. 181 is not, because dividing it by 12 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 12 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
