Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0.
  • Split it: 11 × k = 10 × k + 1 × k. For example 11 × 7 = 70 + 7 = 77.
  • Each answer is 11 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 11.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 11 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 11 away: 110 − 11 = 99. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 11: 110 + 11 = 121. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 11 → 22 → 44.

There are 9 multiples of 11 below 100, and 90 below 1,000. A number is in the 11 times table exactly when it divides by 11 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 11 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 11 × 1 = 11 is odd, 11 × 2 = 22 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 11 × 10 = 110, and 11 × 100 = 1,100. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 110 is 55.

Using the 11 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 11 × 7 = 77, you know 77 ÷ 11 = 7 and 77 ÷ 7 = 11. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 11 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
    Answer3 × 11 = 33 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $11 each. How much do 9 tickets cost?
    Answer9 × $11 = $99.
  3. 99 chairs are set out in rows of 11. How many rows are there?
    Answer99 ÷ 11 = 9 rows.
  4. A plant grows 11 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 12 weeks?
    Answer12 × 11 = 132 millimetres.

About this page

The table, the patterns and the practice questions are all calculated for 11 when the page is opened, so every fact on it is exact. Use the options above the worksheet to change the number of questions or the largest multiplier.

Questions

What is 11 × 12?

132.

What is half of 11 × 8?

11 × 8 = 88, and half of that is 44, which is 11 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 11 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 11 contain nothing.

What is 11 × 7 and 11 × 8?

11 × 7 = 77 and 11 × 8 = 88. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 165 in the 11 times table?

Yes: 165 ÷ 11 = 15 with no remainder. 166 is not, because dividing it by 11 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 11 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
