Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 1: 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 1040 is even.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1040 × k = 1040 × k + 0 × k.
  • Each answer is 1040 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1040.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 1040 times table is double the answer in the 520 times table: 520 × 6 = 3,120, so 1040 × 6 = 6,240. To multiply 1040 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1040 away: 10,400 − 1040 = 9,360. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1040: 10,400 + 1040 = 11,440. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1040 → 2,080 → 4,160.

Every multiple of 1040 is at least 1040, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1040 times table exactly when it divides by 1040 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1040 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1040 × 10 = 10,400, and 1040 × 100 = 104,000. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 10,400 is 5,200.

Using the 1040 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1040 × 7 = 7,280, you know 7,280 ÷ 1040 = 7 and 7,280 ÷ 7 = 1040. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1040 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
    Answer3 × 1040 = 3,120 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1040 each. How much do 7 tickets cost?
    Answer7 × $1040 = $7,280.
  3. 6,240 chairs are set out in rows of 1040. How many rows are there?
    Answer6,240 ÷ 1040 = 6 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1040 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 10 weeks?
    Answer10 × 1040 = 10,400 millimetres.

Questions

What is 1040 × 12?

12,480.

What is half of 1040 × 8?

1040 × 8 = 8,320, and half of that is 4,160, which is 1040 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1040 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1040 contain nothing.

What is 1040 × 7 and 1040 × 8?

1040 × 7 = 7,280 and 1040 × 8 = 8,320. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 15,600 in the 1040 times table?

Yes: 15,600 ÷ 1040 = 15 with no remainder. 15,601 is not, because dividing it by 1040 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1040 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
