Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1045 × k = 1040 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 1045 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1045.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 1045 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1045 away: 10,450 − 1045 = 9,405. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1045: 10,450 + 1045 = 11,495. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1045 → 2,090 → 4,180.

Every multiple of 1045 is at least 1045, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1045 times table exactly when it divides by 1045 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1045 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 1045 × 1 = 1045 is odd, 1045 × 2 = 2,090 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1045 × 10 = 10,450, and 1045 × 100 = 104,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 10,450 is 5,225.

Using the 1045 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1045 × 7 = 7,315, you know 7,315 ÷ 1045 = 7 and 7,315 ÷ 7 = 1045. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1045 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
    Answer3 × 1045 = 3,135 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1045 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
    Answer6 × $1045 = $6,270.
  3. 2,090 chairs are set out in rows of 1045. How many rows are there?
    Answer2,090 ÷ 1045 = 2 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1045 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 6 weeks?

Questions

What is 1045 × 12?

12,540.

What is half of 1045 × 8?

1045 × 8 = 8,360, and half of that is 4,180, which is 1045 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1045 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1045 contain nothing.

What is 1045 × 7 and 1045 × 8?

1045 × 7 = 7,315 and 1045 × 8 = 8,360. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 15,675 in the 1045 times table?

Yes: 15,675 ÷ 1045 = 15 with no remainder. 15,676 is not, because dividing it by 1045 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1045 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
