Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1111 × k = 1110 × k + 1 × k.
  • Each answer is 1111 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1111.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 1111 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1111 away: 11,110 − 1111 = 9,999. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1111: 11,110 + 1111 = 12,221. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1111 → 2,222 → 4,444.

Every multiple of 1111 is at least 1111, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1111 times table exactly when it divides by 1111 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1111 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 1111 × 1 = 1111 is odd, 1111 × 2 = 2,222 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1111 × 10 = 11,110, and 1111 × 100 = 111,100. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 11,110 is 5,555.

Using the 1111 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1111 × 7 = 7,777, you know 7,777 ÷ 1111 = 7 and 7,777 ÷ 7 = 1111. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1111 pencils. How many pencils are in 7 boxes?
    Answer7 × 1111 = 7,777 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1111 each. How much do 11 tickets cost?
    Answer11 × $1111 = $12,221.

    Answer2,222 ÷ 1111 = 2 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1111 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 10 weeks?

Questions

What is 1111 × 12?

13,332.

What is half of 1111 × 8?

1111 × 8 = 8,888, and half of that is 4,444, which is 1111 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1111 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1111 contain nothing.

What is 1111 × 7 and 1111 × 8?

1111 × 7 = 7,777 and 1111 × 8 = 8,888. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 16,665 in the 1111 times table?

Yes: 16,665 ÷ 1111 = 15 with no remainder. 16,666 is not, because dividing it by 1111 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1111 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
