Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1125 × k = 1120 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 1125 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1125.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 1125 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1125 away: 11,250 − 1125 = 10,125. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1125: 11,250 + 1125 = 12,375. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1125 → 2,250 → 4,500.

Every multiple of 1125 is at least 1125, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1125 times table exactly when it divides by 1125 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1125 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 1125 × 1 = 1125 is odd, 1125 × 2 = 2,250 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1125 × 10 = 11,250, and 1125 × 100 = 112,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 11,250 is 5,625.

Using the 1125 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1125 × 7 = 7,875, you know 7,875 ÷ 1125 = 7 and 7,875 ÷ 7 = 1125. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1125 pencils. How many pencils are in 8 boxes?
    Answer8 × 1125 = 9,000 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1125 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
    Answer6 × $1125 = $6,750.
  3. 3,375 chairs are set out in rows of 1125. How many rows are there?
    Answer3,375 ÷ 1125 = 3 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1125 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 6 weeks?
    Answer6 × 1125 = 6,750 millimetres.

Questions

What is 1125 × 12?

13,500.

What is half of 1125 × 8?

1125 × 8 = 9,000, and half of that is 4,500, which is 1125 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1125 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1125 contain nothing.

What is 1125 × 7 and 1125 × 8?

1125 × 7 = 7,875 and 1125 × 8 = 9,000. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 16,875 in the 1125 times table?

Yes: 16,875 ÷ 1125 = 15 with no remainder. 16,876 is not, because dividing it by 1125 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1125 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
