Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1215 × k = 1210 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 1215 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1215.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 1215 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1215 away: 12,150 − 1215 = 10,935. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1215: 12,150 + 1215 = 13,365. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1215 → 2,430 → 4,860.

Every multiple of 1215 is at least 1215, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1215 times table exactly when it divides by 1215 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1215 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 1215 × 1 = 1215 is odd, 1215 × 2 = 2,430 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1215 × 10 = 12,150, and 1215 × 100 = 121,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 12,150 is 6,075.

Using the 1215 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1215 × 7 = 8,505, you know 8,505 ÷ 1215 = 7 and 8,505 ÷ 7 = 1215. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1215 pencils. How many pencils are in 9 boxes?
    Answer9 × 1215 = 10,935 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1215 each. How much do 9 tickets cost?
    Answer9 × $1215 = $10,935.
  3. 3,645 chairs are set out in rows of 1215. How many rows are there?
    Answer3,645 ÷ 1215 = 3 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1215 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 11 weeks?
    Answer11 × 1215 = 13,365 millimetres.

Questions

What is 1215 × 12?

14,580.

What is half of 1215 × 8?

1215 × 8 = 9,720, and half of that is 4,860, which is 1215 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1215 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1215 contain nothing.

What is 1215 × 7 and 1215 × 8?

1215 × 7 = 8,505 and 1215 × 8 = 9,720. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 18,225 in the 1215 times table?

Yes: 18,225 ÷ 1215 = 15 with no remainder. 18,226 is not, because dividing it by 1215 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1215 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
