Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 125 × k = 120 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 125 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 125.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 125 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 125 away: 1,250 − 125 = 1,125. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 125: 1,250 + 125 = 1,375. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 125 → 250 → 500.

Every multiple of 125 is at least 125, so there are none below 100 and 7 below 1,000. A number is in the 125 times table exactly when it divides by 125 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 125 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 125 × 1 = 125 is odd, 125 × 2 = 250 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 125 × 10 = 1,250, and 125 × 100 = 12,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 1,250 is 625.

Using the 125 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 125 × 7 = 875, you know 875 ÷ 125 = 7 and 875 ÷ 7 = 125. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 125 pencils. How many pencils are in 9 boxes?
    Answer9 × 125 = 1,125 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $125 each. How much do 5 tickets cost?
    Answer5 × $125 = $625.
  3. 875 chairs are set out in rows of 125. How many rows are there?
    Answer875 ÷ 125 = 7 rows.
  4. A plant grows 125 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 9 weeks?
    Answer9 × 125 = 1,125 millimetres.

Questions

What is 125 × 12?

1,500.

What is half of 125 × 8?

125 × 8 = 1,000, and half of that is 500, which is 125 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 125 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 125 contain nothing.

What is 125 × 7 and 125 × 8?

125 × 7 = 875 and 125 × 8 = 1,000. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 1,875 in the 125 times table?

Yes: 1,875 ÷ 125 = 15 with no remainder. 1,876 is not, because dividing it by 125 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 125 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
