Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1255 × k = 1250 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 1255 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1255.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 1255 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1255 away: 12,550 − 1255 = 11,295. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1255: 12,550 + 1255 = 13,805. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1255 → 2,510 → 5,020.

Every multiple of 1255 is at least 1255, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1255 times table exactly when it divides by 1255 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1255 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 1255 × 1 = 1255 is odd, 1255 × 2 = 2,510 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1255 × 10 = 12,550, and 1255 × 100 = 125,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 12,550 is 6,275.

Using the 1255 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1255 × 7 = 8,785, you know 8,785 ÷ 1255 = 7 and 8,785 ÷ 7 = 1255. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1255 pencils. How many pencils are in 5 boxes?
    Answer5 × 1255 = 6,275 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1255 each. How much do 11 tickets cost?
    Answer11 × $1255 = $13,805.
  3. 11,295 chairs are set out in rows of 1255. How many rows are there?
    Answer11,295 ÷ 1255 = 9 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1255 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 6 weeks?

Questions

What is 1255 × 12?

15,060.

What is half of 1255 × 8?

1255 × 8 = 10,040, and half of that is 5,020, which is 1255 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1255 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1255 contain nothing.

What is 1255 × 7 and 1255 × 8?

1255 × 7 = 8,785 and 1255 × 8 = 10,040. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 18,825 in the 1255 times table?

Yes: 18,825 ÷ 1255 = 15 with no remainder. 18,826 is not, because dividing it by 1255 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1255 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
