Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 1: 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 1280 is even.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1280 × k = 1280 × k + 0 × k.
  • Each answer is 1280 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1280.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 1280 times table is double the answer in the 640 times table: 640 × 6 = 3,840, so 1280 × 6 = 7,680. To multiply 1280 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1280 away: 12,800 − 1280 = 11,520. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1280: 12,800 + 1280 = 14,080. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1280 → 2,560 → 5,120.

Every multiple of 1280 is at least 1280, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1280 times table exactly when it divides by 1280 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1280 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1280 × 10 = 12,800, and 1280 × 100 = 128,000. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 12,800 is 6,400.

Using the 1280 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1280 × 7 = 8,960, you know 8,960 ÷ 1280 = 7 and 8,960 ÷ 7 = 1280. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1280 pencils. How many pencils are in 5 boxes?
    Answer5 × 1280 = 6,400 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1280 each. How much do 8 tickets cost?
    Answer8 × $1280 = $10,240.
  3. 5,120 chairs are set out in rows of 1280. How many rows are there?
    Answer5,120 ÷ 1280 = 4 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1280 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 9 weeks?
    Answer9 × 1280 = 11,520 millimetres.

Questions

What is 1280 × 12?

15,360.

What is half of 1280 × 8?

1280 × 8 = 10,240, and half of that is 5,120, which is 1280 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1280 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1280 contain nothing.

What is 1280 × 7 and 1280 × 8?

1280 × 7 = 8,960 and 1280 × 8 = 10,240. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 19,200 in the 1280 times table?

Yes: 19,200 ÷ 1280 = 15 with no remainder. 19,201 is not, because dividing it by 1280 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1280 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
