Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0.
  • The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1521 × k = 1520 × k + 1 × k.
  • Each answer is 1521 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1521.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 1521 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1521 away: 15,210 − 1521 = 13,689. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1521: 15,210 + 1521 = 16,731. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1521 → 3,042 → 6,084.

Every multiple of 1521 is at least 1521, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1521 times table exactly when it divides by 1521 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1521 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 1521 × 1 = 1521 is odd, 1521 × 2 = 3,042 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1521 × 10 = 15,210, and 1521 × 100 = 152,100. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 15,210 is 7,605.

Using the 1521 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1521 × 7 = 10,647, you know 10,647 ÷ 1521 = 7 and 10,647 ÷ 7 = 1521. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1521 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
    Answer4 × 1521 = 6,084 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1521 each. How much do 4 tickets cost?
    Answer4 × $1521 = $6,084.

Questions

What is 1521 × 12?

18,252.

What is half of 1521 × 8?

1521 × 8 = 12,168, and half of that is 6,084, which is 1521 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1521 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1521 contain nothing.

What is 1521 × 7 and 1521 × 8?

1521 × 7 = 10,647 and 1521 × 8 = 12,168. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 22,815 in the 1521 times table?

Yes: 22,815 ÷ 1521 = 15 with no remainder. 22,816 is not, because dividing it by 1521 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1521 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
