Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 185 × k = 180 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 185 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 185.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 185 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 185 away: 1,850 − 185 = 1,665. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 185: 1,850 + 185 = 2,035. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 185 → 370 → 740.

Every multiple of 185 is at least 185, so there are none below 100 and 5 below 1,000. A number is in the 185 times table exactly when it divides by 185 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 185 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 185 × 1 = 185 is odd, 185 × 2 = 370 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 185 × 10 = 1,850, and 185 × 100 = 18,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 1,850 is 925.

Using the 185 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 185 × 7 = 1,295, you know 1,295 ÷ 185 = 7 and 1,295 ÷ 7 = 185. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 185 pencils. How many pencils are in 6 boxes?
    Answer6 × 185 = 1,110 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $185 each. How much do 7 tickets cost?
    Answer7 × $185 = $1,295.
  3. 1,665 chairs are set out in rows of 185. How many rows are there?
    Answer1,665 ÷ 185 = 9 rows.
  4. A plant grows 185 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 6 weeks?
    Answer6 × 185 = 1,110 millimetres.

Questions

What is 185 × 12?

2,220.

What is half of 185 × 8?

185 × 8 = 1,480, and half of that is 740, which is 185 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 185 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 185 contain nothing.

What is 185 × 7 and 185 × 8?

185 × 7 = 1,295 and 185 × 8 = 1,480. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 2,775 in the 185 times table?

Yes: 2,775 ÷ 185 = 15 with no remainder. 2,776 is not, because dividing it by 185 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 185 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
