Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 1: 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 1900 is even.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1900 × k = 1900 × k + 0 × k.
  • Each answer is 1900 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1900.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 1900 times table is double the answer in the 950 times table: 950 × 6 = 5,700, so 1900 × 6 = 11,400. To multiply 1900 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1900 away: 19,000 − 1900 = 17,100. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1900: 19,000 + 1900 = 20,900. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1900 → 3,800 → 7,600.

Every multiple of 1900 is at least 1900, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1900 times table exactly when it divides by 1900 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1900 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1900 × 10 = 19,000, and 1900 × 100 = 190,000. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 19,000 is 9,500.

Using the 1900 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1900 × 7 = 13,300, you know 13,300 ÷ 1900 = 7 and 13,300 ÷ 7 = 1900. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1900 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
    Answer4 × 1900 = 7,600 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1900 each. How much do 8 tickets cost?
    Answer8 × $1900 = $15,200.
  3. 9,500 chairs are set out in rows of 1900. How many rows are there?
    Answer9,500 ÷ 1900 = 5 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1900 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 7 weeks?
    Answer7 × 1900 = 13,300 millimetres.

Questions

What is 1900 × 12?

22,800.

What is half of 1900 × 8?

1900 × 8 = 15,200, and half of that is 7,600, which is 1900 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1900 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1900 contain nothing.

What is 1900 × 7 and 1900 × 8?

1900 × 7 = 13,300 and 1900 × 8 = 15,200. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 28,500 in the 1900 times table?

Yes: 28,500 ÷ 1900 = 15 with no remainder. 28,501 is not, because dividing it by 1900 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1900 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
