Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 191 × k = 190 × k + 1 × k.
  • Each answer is 191 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 191.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 191 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 191 away: 1,910 − 191 = 1,719. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 191: 1,910 + 191 = 2,101. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 191 → 382 → 764.

Every multiple of 191 is at least 191, so there are none below 100 and 5 below 1,000. A number is in the 191 times table exactly when it divides by 191 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 191 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 191 × 1 = 191 is odd, 191 × 2 = 382 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 191 × 10 = 1,910, and 191 × 100 = 19,100. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 1,910 is 955.

Using the 191 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 191 × 7 = 1,337, you know 1,337 ÷ 191 = 7 and 1,337 ÷ 7 = 191. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 191 pencils. How many pencils are in 6 boxes?
    Answer6 × 191 = 1,146 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $191 each. How much do 12 tickets cost?
    Answer12 × $191 = $2,292.
  3. 382 chairs are set out in rows of 191. How many rows are there?
    Answer382 ÷ 191 = 2 rows.
  4. A plant grows 191 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 12 weeks?
    Answer12 × 191 = 2,292 millimetres.

Questions

What is 191 × 12?

2,292.

What is half of 191 × 8?

191 × 8 = 1,528, and half of that is 764, which is 191 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 191 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 191 contain nothing.

What is 191 × 7 and 191 × 8?

191 × 7 = 1,337 and 191 × 8 = 1,528. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 2,865 in the 191 times table?

Yes: 2,865 ÷ 191 = 15 with no remainder. 2,866 is not, because dividing it by 191 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 191 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
