Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 225 × k = 220 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 225 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 225.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 225 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 225 away: 2,250 − 225 = 2,025. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 225: 2,250 + 225 = 2,475. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 225 → 450 → 900.

Every multiple of 225 is at least 225, so there are none below 100 and 4 below 1,000. A number is in the 225 times table exactly when it divides by 225 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 225 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 225 × 1 = 225 is odd, 225 × 2 = 450 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 225 × 10 = 2,250, and 225 × 100 = 22,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 2,250 is 1,125.

Using the 225 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 225 × 7 = 1,575, you know 1,575 ÷ 225 = 7 and 1,575 ÷ 7 = 225. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 225 pencils. How many pencils are in 8 boxes?
    Answer8 × 225 = 1,800 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $225 each. How much do 4 tickets cost?
    Answer4 × $225 = $900.
  3. 1,350 chairs are set out in rows of 225. How many rows are there?
    Answer1,350 ÷ 225 = 6 rows.
  4. A plant grows 225 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 6 weeks?
    Answer6 × 225 = 1,350 millimetres.

Questions

What is 225 × 12?

2,700.

What is half of 225 × 8?

225 × 8 = 1,800, and half of that is 900, which is 225 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 225 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 225 contain nothing.

What is 225 × 7 and 225 × 8?

225 × 7 = 1,575 and 225 × 8 = 1,800. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 3,375 in the 225 times table?

Yes: 3,375 ÷ 225 = 15 with no remainder. 3,376 is not, because dividing it by 225 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 225 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
