Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 1: 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 450 is even.
  • The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 450 × k = 450 × k + 0 × k.
  • Each answer is 450 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 450.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 450 times table is double the answer in the 225 times table: 225 × 6 = 1,350, so 450 × 6 = 2,700. To multiply 450 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 450 away: 4,500 − 450 = 4,050. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 450: 4,500 + 450 = 4,950. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 450 → 900 → 1,800.

Every multiple of 450 is at least 450, so there are none below 100 and 2 below 1,000. A number is in the 450 times table exactly when it divides by 450 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 450 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 450 × 10 = 4,500, and 450 × 100 = 45,000. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 4,500 is 2,250.

Using the 450 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 450 × 7 = 3,150, you know 3,150 ÷ 450 = 7 and 3,150 ÷ 7 = 450. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 450 pencils. How many pencils are in 6 boxes?
    Answer6 × 450 = 2,700 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $450 each. How much do 5 tickets cost?
    Answer5 × $450 = $2,250.
  3. 1,350 chairs are set out in rows of 450. How many rows are there?
    Answer1,350 ÷ 450 = 3 rows.
  4. A plant grows 450 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 7 weeks?
    Answer7 × 450 = 3,150 millimetres.

Questions

What is 450 × 12?

5,400.

What is half of 450 × 8?

450 × 8 = 3,600, and half of that is 1,800, which is 450 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 450 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 450 contain nothing.

What is 450 × 7 and 450 × 8?

450 × 7 = 3,150 and 450 × 8 = 3,600. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 6,750 in the 450 times table?

Yes: 6,750 ÷ 450 = 15 with no remainder. 6,751 is not, because dividing it by 450 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 450 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
