Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 455 × k = 450 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 455 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 455.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 455 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 455 away: 4,550 − 455 = 4,095. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 455: 4,550 + 455 = 5,005. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 455 → 910 → 1,820.

Every multiple of 455 is at least 455, so there are none below 100 and 2 below 1,000. A number is in the 455 times table exactly when it divides by 455 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 455 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 455 × 1 = 455 is odd, 455 × 2 = 910 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 455 × 10 = 4,550, and 455 × 100 = 45,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 4,550 is 2,275.

Using the 455 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 455 × 7 = 3,185, you know 3,185 ÷ 455 = 7 and 3,185 ÷ 7 = 455. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 455 pencils. How many pencils are in 8 boxes?
    Answer8 × 455 = 3,640 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $455 each. How much do 4 tickets cost?

Questions

What is 455 × 12?

5,460.

What is half of 455 × 8?

455 × 8 = 3,640, and half of that is 1,820, which is 455 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 455 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 455 contain nothing.

What is 455 × 7 and 455 × 8?

455 × 7 = 3,185 and 455 × 8 = 3,640. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 6,825 in the 455 times table?

Yes: 6,825 ÷ 455 = 15 with no remainder. 6,826 is not, because dividing it by 455 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 455 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
