Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 457 × k = 450 × k + 7 × k.
  • Each answer is 457 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 457.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 457 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 457 away: 4,570 − 457 = 4,113. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 457: 4,570 + 457 = 5,027. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 457 → 914 → 1,828.

Every multiple of 457 is at least 457, so there are none below 100 and 2 below 1,000. A number is in the 457 times table exactly when it divides by 457 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 457 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 457 × 1 = 457 is odd, 457 × 2 = 914 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 457 × 10 = 4,570, and 457 × 100 = 45,700. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 4,570 is 2,285.

Using the 457 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 457 × 7 = 3,199, you know 3,199 ÷ 457 = 7 and 3,199 ÷ 7 = 457. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Questions

What is 457 × 12?

5,484.

What is half of 457 × 8?

457 × 8 = 3,656, and half of that is 1,828, which is 457 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
