Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0.
- Split it into tens and ones: 47 × k = 40 × k + 7 × k.
- Each answer is 47 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 47.
Building it from tables you already know
To multiply 47 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 47 away: 470 − 47 = 423. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 47: 470 + 47 = 517. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 47 → 94 → 188.
There are 2 multiples of 47 below 100, and 21 below 1,000. A number is in the 47 times table exactly when it divides by 47 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 47 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 47 × 1 = 47 is odd, 47 × 2 = 94 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 47 × 10 = 470, and 47 × 100 = 4,700. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 470 is 235.
Using the 47 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 47 × 7 = 329, you know 329 ÷ 47 = 7 and 329 ÷ 7 = 47. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 47 pencils. How many pencils are in 5 boxes?
Answer
5 × 47 = 235 pencils. - Tickets cost $47 each. How much do 12 tickets cost?
Answer
12 × $47 = $564. - 282 chairs are set out in rows of 47. How many rows are there?
Answer
282 ÷ 47 = 6 rows. - A plant grows 47 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 12 weeks?
Answer
12 × 47 = 564 millimetres.
Questions
What is 47 × 12?
564.
What is half of 47 × 8?
47 × 8 = 376, and half of that is 188, which is 47 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 47 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 47 contain nothing.
What is 47 × 7 and 47 × 8?
47 × 7 = 329 and 47 × 8 = 376. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 705 in the 47 times table?
Yes: 705 ÷ 47 = 15 with no remainder. 706 is not, because dividing it by 47 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 47 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
