Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 45 × k = 40 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 45 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 45.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 45 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 45 away: 450 − 45 = 405. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 45: 450 + 45 = 495. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 45 → 90 → 180.

There are 2 multiples of 45 below 100, and 22 below 1,000. A number is in the 45 times table exactly when it divides by 45 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 45 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 45 × 1 = 45 is odd, 45 × 2 = 90 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 45 × 10 = 450, and 45 × 100 = 4,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 450 is 225.

Using the 45 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 45 × 7 = 315, you know 315 ÷ 45 = 7 and 315 ÷ 7 = 45. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 45 pencils. How many pencils are in 5 boxes?
    Answer5 × 45 = 225 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $45 each. How much do 9 tickets cost?
    Answer9 × $45 = $405.
  3. 270 chairs are set out in rows of 45. How many rows are there?
    Answer270 ÷ 45 = 6 rows.
  4. A plant grows 45 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 9 weeks?
    Answer9 × 45 = 405 millimetres.

Questions

What is 45 × 12?

540.

What is half of 45 × 8?

45 × 8 = 360, and half of that is 180, which is 45 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 45 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 45 contain nothing.

What is 45 × 7 and 45 × 8?

45 × 7 = 315 and 45 × 8 = 360. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 675 in the 45 times table?

Yes: 675 ÷ 45 = 15 with no remainder. 676 is not, because dividing it by 45 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 45 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
