Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
- Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
- Split it into tens and ones: 485 × k = 480 × k + 5 × k.
- Each answer is 485 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 485.
Building it from tables you already know
To multiply 485 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 485 away: 4,850 − 485 = 4,365. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 485: 4,850 + 485 = 5,335. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 485 → 970 → 1,940.
Every multiple of 485 is at least 485, so there are none below 100 and 2 below 1,000. A number is in the 485 times table exactly when it divides by 485 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 485 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 485 × 1 = 485 is odd, 485 × 2 = 970 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 485 × 10 = 4,850, and 485 × 100 = 48,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 4,850 is 2,425.
Using the 485 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 485 × 7 = 3,395, you know 3,395 ÷ 485 = 7 and 3,395 ÷ 7 = 485. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 485 pencils. How many pencils are in 9 boxes?
Answer
9 × 485 = 4,365 pencils. - Tickets cost $485 each. How much do 8 tickets cost?
Answer
8 × $485 = $3,880. - 3,395 chairs are set out in rows of 485. How many rows are there?
Answer
3,395 ÷ 485 = 7 rows. - A plant grows 485 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 6 weeks?
Answer
6 × 485 = 2,910 millimetres.
Questions
What is 485 × 12?
5,820.
What is half of 485 × 8?
485 × 8 = 3,880, and half of that is 1,940, which is 485 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 485 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 485 contain nothing.
What is 485 × 7 and 485 × 8?
485 × 7 = 3,395 and 485 × 8 = 3,880. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 7,275 in the 485 times table?
Yes: 7,275 ÷ 485 = 15 with no remainder. 7,276 is not, because dividing it by 485 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 485 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
