Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 495 × k = 490 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 495 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 495.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 495 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 495 away: 4,950 − 495 = 4,455. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 495: 4,950 + 495 = 5,445. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 495 → 990 → 1,980.

Every multiple of 495 is at least 495, so there are none below 100 and 2 below 1,000. A number is in the 495 times table exactly when it divides by 495 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 495 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 495 × 1 = 495 is odd, 495 × 2 = 990 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 495 × 10 = 4,950, and 495 × 100 = 49,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 4,950 is 2,475.

Using the 495 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 495 × 7 = 3,465, you know 3,465 ÷ 495 = 7 and 3,465 ÷ 7 = 495. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Questions

What is 495 × 12?

5,940.

What is half of 495 × 8?

495 × 8 = 3,960, and half of that is 1,980, which is 495 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 495 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 495 contain nothing.

What is 495 × 7 and 495 × 8?

495 × 7 = 3,465 and 495 × 8 = 3,960. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 7,425 in the 495 times table?

Yes: 7,425 ÷ 495 = 15 with no remainder. 7,426 is not, because dividing it by 495 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 495 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
