Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 501 × k = 500 × k + 1 × k.
  • Each answer is 501 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 501.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 501 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 501 away: 5,010 − 501 = 4,509. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 501: 5,010 + 501 = 5,511. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 501 → 1,002 → 2,004.

Every multiple of 501 is at least 501, so there are none below 100 and 1 below 1,000. A number is in the 501 times table exactly when it divides by 501 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 501 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 501 × 1 = 501 is odd, 501 × 2 = 1,002 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 501 × 10 = 5,010, and 501 × 100 = 50,100. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 5,010 is 2,505.

Using the 501 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 501 × 7 = 3,507, you know 3,507 ÷ 501 = 7 and 3,507 ÷ 7 = 501. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 501 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
    Answer3 × 501 = 1,503 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $501 each. How much do 8 tickets cost?
    Answer8 × $501 = $4,008.
  3. 3,006 chairs are set out in rows of 501. How many rows are there?
    Answer3,006 ÷ 501 = 6 rows.
  4. A plant grows 501 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 11 weeks?
    Answer11 × 501 = 5,511 millimetres.

Questions

What is 501 × 12?

6,012.

What is half of 501 × 8?

501 × 8 = 4,008, and half of that is 2,004, which is 501 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 501 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 501 contain nothing.

What is 501 × 7 and 501 × 8?

501 × 7 = 3,507 and 501 × 8 = 4,008. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 7,515 in the 501 times table?

Yes: 7,515 ÷ 501 = 15 with no remainder. 7,516 is not, because dividing it by 501 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 501 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
