Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 2, 4, 6, 8, 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 1002 is even.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1002 × k = 1000 × k + 2 × k.
  • Each answer is 1002 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1002.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 1002 times table is double the answer in the 501 times table: 501 × 6 = 3,006, so 1002 × 6 = 6,012. To multiply 1002 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1002 away: 10,020 − 1002 = 9,018. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1002: 10,020 + 1002 = 11,022. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1002 → 2,004 → 4,008.

Every multiple of 1002 is at least 1002, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1002 times table exactly when it divides by 1002 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1002 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1002 × 10 = 10,020, and 1002 × 100 = 100,200. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 10,020 is 5,010.

Using the 1002 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1002 × 7 = 7,014, you know 7,014 ÷ 1002 = 7 and 7,014 ÷ 7 = 1002. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1002 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
    Answer4 × 1002 = 4,008 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1002 each. How much do 12 tickets cost?
    Answer12 × $1002 = $12,024.
  3. 3,006 chairs are set out in rows of 1002. How many rows are there?
    Answer3,006 ÷ 1002 = 3 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1002 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 7 weeks?
    Answer7 × 1002 = 7,014 millimetres.

Questions

What is 1002 × 12?

12,024.

What is half of 1002 × 8?

1002 × 8 = 8,016, and half of that is 4,008, which is 1002 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1002 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1002 contain nothing.

What is 1002 × 7 and 1002 × 8?

1002 × 7 = 7,014 and 1002 × 8 = 8,016. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 15,030 in the 1002 times table?

Yes: 15,030 ÷ 1002 = 15 with no remainder. 15,031 is not, because dividing it by 1002 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1002 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
