Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 65 × k = 60 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 65 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 65.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 65 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 65 away: 650 − 65 = 585. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 65: 650 + 65 = 715. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 65 → 130 → 260.

There are 1 multiples of 65 below 100, and 15 below 1,000. A number is in the 65 times table exactly when it divides by 65 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 65 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 65 × 1 = 65 is odd, 65 × 2 = 130 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 65 × 10 = 650, and 65 × 100 = 6,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 650 is 325.

Using the 65 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 65 × 7 = 455, you know 455 ÷ 65 = 7 and 455 ÷ 7 = 65. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 65 pencils. How many pencils are in 6 boxes?
    Answer6 × 65 = 390 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $65 each. How much do 4 tickets cost?
    Answer4 × $65 = $260.
  3. 520 chairs are set out in rows of 65. How many rows are there?
    Answer520 ÷ 65 = 8 rows.
  4. A plant grows 65 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 11 weeks?
    Answer11 × 65 = 715 millimetres.

Questions

What is 65 × 12?

780.

What is half of 65 × 8?

65 × 8 = 520, and half of that is 260, which is 65 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 65 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 65 contain nothing.

What is 65 × 7 and 65 × 8?

65 × 7 = 455 and 65 × 8 = 520. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 975 in the 65 times table?

Yes: 975 ÷ 65 = 15 with no remainder. 976 is not, because dividing it by 65 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 65 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
