Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 1: 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 720 is even.
  • The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 720 × k = 720 × k + 0 × k.
  • Each answer is 720 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 720.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 720 times table is double the answer in the 360 times table: 360 × 6 = 2,160, so 720 × 6 = 4,320. To multiply 720 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 720 away: 7,200 − 720 = 6,480. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 720: 7,200 + 720 = 7,920. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 720 → 1,440 → 2,880.

Every multiple of 720 is at least 720, so there are none below 100 and 1 below 1,000. A number is in the 720 times table exactly when it divides by 720 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 720 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 720 × 10 = 7,200, and 720 × 100 = 72,000. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 7,200 is 3,600.

Using the 720 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 720 × 7 = 5,040, you know 5,040 ÷ 720 = 7 and 5,040 ÷ 7 = 720. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 720 pencils. How many pencils are in 9 boxes?
    Answer9 × 720 = 6,480 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $720 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
    Answer6 × $720 = $4,320.
  3. 4,320 chairs are set out in rows of 720. How many rows are there?
    Answer4,320 ÷ 720 = 6 rows.
  4. A plant grows 720 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 6 weeks?
    Answer6 × 720 = 4,320 millimetres.

Questions

What is 720 × 12?

8,640.

What is half of 720 × 8?

720 × 8 = 5,760, and half of that is 2,880, which is 720 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 720 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 720 contain nothing.

What is 720 × 7 and 720 × 8?

720 × 7 = 5,040 and 720 × 8 = 5,760. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 10,800 in the 720 times table?

Yes: 10,800 ÷ 720 = 15 with no remainder. 10,801 is not, because dividing it by 720 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 720 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
