Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 1: 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 1440 is even.
  • The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1440 × k = 1440 × k + 0 × k.
  • Each answer is 1440 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1440.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 1440 times table is double the answer in the 720 times table: 720 × 6 = 4,320, so 1440 × 6 = 8,640. To multiply 1440 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1440 away: 14,400 − 1440 = 12,960. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1440: 14,400 + 1440 = 15,840. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1440 → 2,880 → 5,760.

Every multiple of 1440 is at least 1440, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1440 times table exactly when it divides by 1440 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1440 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1440 × 10 = 14,400, and 1440 × 100 = 144,000. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 14,400 is 7,200.

Using the 1440 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1440 × 7 = 10,080, you know 10,080 ÷ 1440 = 7 and 10,080 ÷ 7 = 1440. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1440 pencils. How many pencils are in 9 boxes?
    Answer9 × 1440 = 12,960 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1440 each. How much do 8 tickets cost?
    Answer8 × $1440 = $11,520.
  3. 8,640 chairs are set out in rows of 1440. How many rows are there?
    Answer8,640 ÷ 1440 = 6 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1440 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 12 weeks?
    Answer12 × 1440 = 17,280 millimetres.

Questions

What is 1440 × 12?

17,280.

What is half of 1440 × 8?

1440 × 8 = 11,520, and half of that is 5,760, which is 1440 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1440 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1440 contain nothing.

What is 1440 × 7 and 1440 × 8?

1440 × 7 = 10,080 and 1440 × 8 = 11,520. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 21,600 in the 1440 times table?

Yes: 21,600 ÷ 1440 = 15 with no remainder. 21,601 is not, because dividing it by 1440 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1440 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
