Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 4, 8, 2, 6, 0.
- Every answer is even, because 84 is even.
- Split it into tens and ones: 84 × k = 80 × k + 4 × k.
- Each answer is 84 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 84.
Building it from tables you already know
Every answer in the 84 times table is double the answer in the 42 times table: 42 × 6 = 252, so 84 × 6 = 504. To multiply 84 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 84 away: 840 − 84 = 756. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 84: 840 + 84 = 924. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 84 → 168 → 336.
There are 1 multiples of 84 below 100, and 11 below 1,000. A number is in the 84 times table exactly when it divides by 84 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 84 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 84 × 10 = 840, and 84 × 100 = 8,400. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 840 is 420.
Using the 84 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 84 × 7 = 588, you know 588 ÷ 84 = 7 and 588 ÷ 7 = 84. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 84 pencils. How many pencils are in 7 boxes?
Answer
7 × 84 = 588 pencils. - Tickets cost $84 each. How much do 9 tickets cost?
Answer
9 × $84 = $756. - 420 chairs are set out in rows of 84. How many rows are there?
Answer
420 ÷ 84 = 5 rows. - A plant grows 84 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 10 weeks?
Answer
10 × 84 = 840 millimetres.
Questions
What is 84 × 12?
1,008.
What is half of 84 × 8?
84 × 8 = 672, and half of that is 336, which is 84 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 84 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 84 contain nothing.
What is 84 × 7 and 84 × 8?
84 × 7 = 588 and 84 × 8 = 672. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 1,260 in the 84 times table?
Yes: 1,260 ÷ 84 = 15 with no remainder. 1,261 is not, because dividing it by 84 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 84 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
